Oklahoma seeks revenge on Oklahoma state rival No. 22 when he hosts the Cowboys in the annual Bedlam series in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday. This showdown offers the Sooners one last chance to give their fans hope as a miserable 2022 season comes to an end. After going 11-2 last season, Oklahoma is 5-5 and fighting for bowl eligibility. The Sooners’ nine-game winning streak against West Virginia ended in a 23-20 loss last week after backup quarterback Garrett Greene allowed 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma State has slowed down on defense due to injuries but remains a contender in the Big 12 Championship Game race with a 7-3 record. The Cowboys beat Iowa State 20-14 when quarterback Spencer Sanders came off the bench and led two scoring drives while throwing for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Oklahoma has historically dominated Bedlam, holding a 90-19-7 advantage and a 14-2 win record against Mike Gundy in 2021. However, Gundy defeated the Sooners 37-33 last season in what turned out to be Lincoln Riley’s last game turned out to throw Oklahoma out of the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time since its reinstatement. Now Gundy is trying to string together his first winning streak against the Sooners since taking office in 2005.

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State: Must know

Two broken teams: Both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are expected to be among the leading contenders for the Big 12 championship. However, Oklahoma is officially out of contention after setting its first loss record in conference play since 1998. Oklahoma State is still racing live, but injuries have decimated what was once one of the better teams in the Big 12. The Cowboys lost to Kansas with quarterback Spencer Sanders off the lineup and had to reinstate Sanders to escape Iowa State. The outcome of this game could depend on which players from the state of Oklahoma are healthy enough to play.

Disappointing Earlier: Oklahoma was one of the most stunning teams in college football during the Brent Venables’ freshman season. Far too many key stats include “since 1998,” the year before Bob Stoops took over the program, when the Sooners wandered the wilderness. Almost every major aspect of Oklahoma has collapsed under Venables, including a defense that now ranks 94th in goal defense and 109th in total defense. However, losing to Oklahoma State in consecutive seasons would be the ultimate disgrace for a program that hasn’t lost consecutive games to the Pokes since 2002.

Contrasting styles: Both Oklahoma and the state of Oklahoma have found different recipes for building consistency on offense. Oklahoma leads the Big 12 in rushing offense with 221.4 yards per game behind more than 1,100 yards for running back Eric Gray. Conversely, Oklahoma State is totally dependent on quarterback Spencer Sanders to get the offense rolling. Sanders ranks in the top 25 nationally in total individual offense and leads an OSU roster that ranks second in the Big 12 in passing offense. The gap in experience and composure between the Bedlam signal callers could make all the difference.

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State prediction, tips

Oklahoma defeated Kansas with a backup quarterback and Iowa State, the only team with a worse record in conference play than the Sooners. OU dominated Oklahoma State during the Gundy era, but this is the worst Sooners team in 25 years. There’s no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt. Prediction: Oklahoma State +7.5
