11/17/2022 – Pimaxa maker of virtual reality (VR) hardware and provider of ultra-wide field of view and high-definition consumer VR devices, announced pre-sales this week Campaign on Kickstarter for the new ‘Pimax Portal’ Metaverse Entertainment System is now live.
On November 9th, the company hosted Pimax Frontier 2022, where it showcased its latest VR 3.0 device, the Pimax Portal. According to Pimax, the new device is already in production, with the first product deliveries expected in January 2023. The company hopes the portal can compete with other portable gaming devices like Nintendo Switch and Meta Quest 2.
Pimax said it created the portal to bring the VR 3.0 experience to a mainstream audience at an affordable price. The new device combines four separate devices into one package and includes an innovative handheld gaming device, a VR 3.0 headset for the mainstream audience, a portable PC gaming system and a living room entertainment center. The company anticipates that its new 4-in-1 product will introduce more people to the world of virtual reality.
The Pimax Portal brings 4K resolution to handheld devices and boasts a smooth 144Hz refresh rate. The device also leverages VR technology to provide Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW), which the company says reduces latency to less than 20ms lowers.
The Portal includes two interchangeable lenses, with one set of lenses offering 27 pixels per degree (PPD) and a 100 degree field of view (FoV), making it well-suited for VR experiences. The second set offers 40 PPD and a 60 degree FoV to ensure users can watch high definition movies when traveling or on the go.
In addition, the company has developed a special wide-field headset called “Portal Horizon” that offers a 140-degree field of view. Finally, Pimax is also developing the “Portal Social Edition”, which includes eye-tracking and face-tracking, allowing Portal to provide more natural social experiences.
The portal PC gaming system can connect games with a larger screen and controllers from the company “Pimax XL”. This aspect of the entertainment system provides a shell in which users slip the portal with a large, bright 8.8-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The brand new Pimax Mini Station features a WiGig streaming module for fast streaming and networking. Portal also supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and split rendering, which helps solve low image quality, frame drops, and latency issues that are common in cloud gaming. In addition, Pimax stated that the device also supports all cloud gaming platforms on the market.
Finally, the dock for the Pimax portal offers physical exercise fitness games, large-screen mobile games and various multimedia modes. With 6DoF supported by its gamepad, the dock allows gamers to play games freely and offers a revolution in living room interaction.
The device, which appears to be modular in design, hangs around the portal display, which is used either as a handheld gaming system or in the system’s VR headset in a similar fashion to other pluggable VR headsets (like Google Daydream or Google). can be placed Samsung Gear VR) have worked. The controllers are designed to either clip to the side of the display for handheld gaming, much like the Nintendo Switch, or plug into VR controllers for use with the headset.
Backers on Kickstarter have several options available. Early bird buyers can purchase just the Pimax Portal handset for $299 (standard price $399) or opt for the Pimax Portal QLED option, which costs $549. The cheapest bundle that includes a headset is the Portal View bundle, which costs $449 early bird ($499 standard price) and comes with the system’s Pimax Portal handset and View VR headset. Pimax announced that it will be showcasing its Pimax Portal Metaverse entertainment system, as well as the new Pimax Crystal headset at the several road shows worldwide for the months of November and December. However, all of the company’s roadshow events currently appear to be held in Europe only at the time of publication.
