The father-son duo behind the Patriot Awards trophies share how their patriotic business “unintentionally” started

From working a 9-5 to starting a business, Shane Henderson never imagined what an Instagram post would do to his life and that of his son. Now, Shane and Justis Henderson’s company, Metal Art of Wisconsin, will be honored by designing the trophies for Fox Nation’s upcoming 2022 Patriot Awards.

“Fox Patriot Awards is like a dream come true… We couldn’t be more humbled and honored to be a part of it,” Shane said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

The 4th Annual Patriot Awards, hosted by Fox News’ Pete Hegseth, is an annual show hosted by the streaming service dedicated to celebrating our nation real heroes. With award categories like Service to Veterans and Most Valuable Patriot, patriotism will fly high this Thursday, November 17 in Hollywood, Fla.

In addition to a long list of FOX favorites, primetime personalities and guests of honor, the father-son duo behind the awards will be in attendance themselves.

The Hendersons started their business in 2013 after setting up an Instagram account for their designs. What was once a hobby sparked an opportunity almost overnight thanks to social media.

“We were not at all prepared for what happened. And it was a big fork in the road to achieving the American Dream and doing anything in this business, or do we keep doing our 9-to-5 jobs?” said Metal Art of Wisconsin owner Shane Henderson. “So we went all in.”

“It’s possible for anyone to do it. It’s the American Dream. It was not passed on, I did not inherit it. He wasn’t given to us. You know, we fought for every sale,” added Shane.

Shane told Fox News Digital that he was a welder after high school before moving to Wisconsin, where he continued to practice his trade. His son Justis grew up at his father’s side and nurtured his own passion for the craft.

“I fell in love with it because it really opened the door to creativity. And it taught me to think outside the box,” Justis shared. “You could say my first job was when I was ten years old and it just hasn’t stopped since.”

“It all happened by accident,” Shane said. “I mean, I didn’t go to school. I didn’t go to college. I wasn’t trying to start a business.

“In short, we woke up overnight and had thousands of orders,” Shane said. “And our business… started unintentionally.”

After immersing themselves in the new company, the Hendersons expanded their product line. One of their popular designs, created in 2017, is the Freedom Cabinet, which hides storage space behind its signature flag design.

Their products range from outdoor to indoor flags, 2D to 3D products, commemoratives to personalized requests and even desk sized flags. The Hendersons’ company also creates bald eagles, monogrammed shields and 3D Spartan helmets.

“Now we have all kinds of super high-end CNC machines and engineers working with us,” Shane said. “We do crazy, crazy things, and it’s all patriotic and everything, it’s all variations of the flag and veiling and wavy maple and mahogany flags.”

Aside from their thriving business, the Hendersons shared that a love of country is a crucial aspect.

“We’ve always been a patriotic family, super workers, work for what you want in life. And the tattered flag, I saw kind of a variation of that out there, and we made our own version of it and painted it. Our artistic eye, I think, just resonated in America at the time.

Aside from their patriotic creations, Shane and Justis Henderson also give back to America’s heroes with their Flags for Fortitude program. Launched in 2017, the Flags for Fortitude program allows people across the country to nominate local heroes, who honor the Hendersons with a custom flag.

“People appoint local heroes, whether it’s a veteran or a cop or, you know, a school cook or a border guard,” Shane said. “Anyone who makes a difference in the community can be nominated, send us pictures and tell their story.”

The father-son team also donated 13 large black flags to the families of the soldiers and women killed in the attack on Kabul Airport in Afghanistan last August. They said they made another 17 for the survivors of the attack.

“It was super emotional for our entire team,” said Shane. “It was a great project to be a part of.”

Patriotism and love of country are at the heart of Metal Art of Wisconsin, making them a natural fit for the design of Fox Nation’s Patriot Awards honors.

When designing the awards, the Hendersons took inspiration from last year’s award winner, then 17-year-old Bobby Reuter. The owner of Long Island Flags had created awards that included a wooden flag.

“I looked at that and I was like, ‘Oh man, you know, I think we could build on what he’s done and put our flavor on it,'” Shane told Fox News Digital.

Ahead of the live event, which will be held in person at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino this Thursday and streamed on Fox Nation, the Hendersons shared what it means to them to be a Patriot.

“Patriotism and love of country and love of flag and all that’s fallen is making sure the flag is there,” Shane said. “There’s just so many people and politicians and almost half the country is going to rip all that stuff away. And I think the patriots out there are the ones trying to keep all this stuff going.”

“If you’re part of this new generation that’s emerging, and you’re very patriotic, it’s very rare to see … I have respect for anyone who’s still patriotic,” Justis said. “This country really went down the wrong path. And we’re just here to keep it alive and keeping the spirit alive.”
